Job Description

The Director of Publisher Relations, UK Europe, ANZ and Japan, is responsible for executing a content acquisition/relationship management strategy that supports the immediate sales and overall goals of the company, while promoting the long-term revenue growth of publishing partners in the territories. 

This would  include:

  • Manage highest level 100+  publisher strategic relationships for ac ademic and professional markets in EMEA, ANZ and Japan.  
  • Manage a team of Publisher Relations Managers, providing motivation, support, and guidance to equip them to be fully effective in the commercial negotiations and management of relationships with publishers to reach individual, group and product targets. 
  • Lead initiatives to identify new areas of growth for ProQuest’s international business both in the support and development of new content products and in new opportunities for content partnerships with local publishers. 
  • Develop and implement cost-effective ‘win-win’ strategies and tactics in a highly competitive environment to acquire and maintain the broadest and most appropriate array of rights and business models from International publishers with a special focus on those of highest value to ProQuest.
  • Coordinate with key 3rd party vendors to identify important new content, facilitate their efforts to sign local language publishers and maximize sales.
  • Develop coordinated efforts to maximize publisher transition from print to electronic and to leverage combined print and electronic sales. Facilitate publisher-supported marketing programs.
  • Manage business communications/messaging of royalty information, usage reports and metadata to help publishers understand the value opportunity of working with ProQuest.
  • Provide strategic and other input to publishers to develop business initiatives to improve their acceptability within the marketplace.
  • Maintain a key presence and credibility in the publishing industry by attending and participating in publisher meetings and conferences, communicating the company position on key issues and promoting ProQuest positively.  Speak and participate on panels at relevant conferences and tradeshows and lead efforts to market the value of ProQuest Books to the publishing community.
  • Work with internal teams to identify the content and rights necessary for success in acquiring customers and making sales. Provide insight into the strategies and culture of publishers in order to influence the best business decision-making.
  • Design and prepare reports that provide senior management and operations with feedback and information on new trends in publishing, lessons learned from conferences and publisher meetings; and advice on the development of internal policies related to publishing and content


  • Bachelors’ degree or higher, plus at proven managerial experience in book publishing and/or book distribution. 
  • Excellent researching and problem solving skills, including the ability to analyze, compare, evaluate, reconcile and manage data.
  • Ability to assess the strategic importance, overall costs and benefits of an opportunity and communicating the analysis clearly and effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with ability to professionally interact with a diverse blend of personalities to reach resolution and maintain strong relationships.
  • Strong presentation skills including onsite presentations to communicate value proposition to current and future publishing partners.
  • Ability to develop and analyze new business and financial models that support company and publishing partners.
  • Capacity to learn and master new technology and knowledge of Microsoft Office products; strong skills in Excel.

  • Proficiency of language in addition to English
  • Existing publisher relationships in the UK, Europe, Australia and Japan.

  • This position can be based in either the London or Cambridge UK ProQuest office locations and may be appropriate for full or remote work, subject to approval. 
  • Travel is required.
